Heroin, Prescription Drug Addiction Impacting Newborns
As the opiate abuse epidemic continues to claim lives, it also impacts a very vulnerable part of the population: newborns. Newborn babies whose mothers abused heroin or prescription drugs need to withdraw from those drugs once they are born. This can cause pain, trouble breathing, and inconsolable crying, and long term effects of the drugs can lead to a host of physical and developmental issues for the baby.
NJ 101.5 recently featured a program that is working to help these tiny victims. PSE&G Children’s Specialized Hospital in New Brunswick has been helping these babies for the past five years. Read more about the story here.
