Campaign Motivates Students to Stay Drug-Free
Students in North Carolina are signing pledges this week to stay drug and alcohol-free. The campaign is called “We Are Hope” and it is a collaboration of students and public school officials, as well as HopeRx, a community-based prescription drug abuse initiative centered on education, prevention, and treatment.
Organizers are starting with small goals, and hoping that students will be able to meet those goals and move on to bigger and better goals. “We have a banner here and we’re going to ask each one of you to pledge,” one speaker, Ed Serrano, told students. “And I’m not going to ask you to pledge not to take drugs for the rest of your life. That’s ridiculous. That’s an unrealistic expectation. I would hope that you would, but I’m not going to ask that. But I’m going to ask you this: I’m going to ask you to pledge not to take any type of drugs all next week.”
