Get Home Safely this Fourth of July
The Fourth of July is right around the corner, and many people will find themselves with the dilemma of how to get home safely after being out celebrating with friends. Unfortunately, many people make the poor decision to drive home drunk. According to data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), during July 4th holiday period over the last five years (from 2009 to 2013), 750 people lost their lives in crashes involving drivers with a BAC of .08 or more. These fatalities account for 39% percent of all motor vehicle traffic fatalities over this same five-year period.
If you are going to be out partying on the Fourth of July this year, plan ahead and be safe. Arrange for a designated driver ahead of time, or take advantage of one of the free ride programs that are offered in your area. AAA and Bud Light have partnered to provide “Tow to Go,” which is a free service that will tow your car to your home and give you a ride as well.
A cab is another reliable way home if you have been drinking too much. You can also hire affordable designated driver companies that will drive you safely home. To find a list of these services, visit drinkinganddriving.org.
Drinking and driving is often a sign of a bigger problem. If you or a loved one have been in trouble for drinking in the past, or have gotten a DUI, consider getting help for your alcohol abuse.
